Search for this and you will find a dozen pages telling you Golden Retrievers are "prone to ACL tears." We looked at what the sources actually say, and the picture is more interesting than that.
What the breed data actually shows
The American College of Veterinary Surgeons names breeds with a known higher incidence of cranial cruciate ligament disease: Rottweiler, Newfoundland, Staffordshire Terrier, Mastiff, Akita, Saint Bernard, Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Labrador Retriever.
The Golden Retriever is not on that list. Research on breed predisposition in young dogs returns a similar set of breeds, and again the Golden is not among the standouts.
This does not mean your Golden cannot tear a cruciate ligament. They plainly do — it is one of the more common orthopaedic problems seen in the breed. What it means is that the risk appears to be driven less by something specific to Golden Retrievers and more by the factors that affect all medium-to-large dogs.
We think that is genuinely more useful to know, because those factors are ones you can act on.
What actually drives the risk in a Golden
The ACVS is clear that in most affected dogs, cruciate disease is degenerative — the ligament weakens over months or years and then fails, rather than tearing in a single accident. The things that accelerate that process are:
- Body weight. Weight is an established risk factor in the research literature. Goldens gain weight readily, and every extra kilogram loads a joint that may already be compromised.
- Age and cumulative load. This is a wear process, and it accumulates.
- Conformation. The angle of the tibial plateau affects the shearing force through the ligament, and it varies between individuals.
- Neuter status and timing have been examined in the research literature for several large breeds; this is worth raising with your vet rather than reading conclusions off a product page.
The practical takeaway: if you have a Golden, your leverage is weight and conditioning, not breed fatalism.
Signs to look for
Per VCA Animal Hospitals:
- Sudden lameness, sometimes with no weight on the leg at all
- "Toe touching" — a small amount of weight only
- A limp that comes and goes with activity and rest
- Stiffness after resting
- Sitting with the leg kicked out sideways
- Reluctance to jump up
- Thigh muscle loss on the affected side over time
The intermittent limp is the one to take seriously rather than wait out. It fits a partial tear, and the ACVS notes partial tears almost always progress to complete ones. Catching it at the partial stage gives you the widest set of options.
Diagnosis
Your vet will check for abnormal forward movement of the shin bone relative to the thigh bone, usually via a drawer test or tibial compression test, often with radiographs to assess the joint and exclude other causes (VCA). Sedation is sometimes required, because a tense dog can hold the joint tight enough to mask instability.
Do not assume the knee is the problem
Goldens are also a breed where hip dysplasia and, less commonly, bone tumours feature in the differential for hind-limb lameness. A limp is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Options once it is confirmed
Surgical stabilisation — TPLO, TTA and extracapsular techniques are the common approaches; the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital describes them. An adult Golden sits in the size range where surgery is most often discussed.
Conservative management — weight control, controlled activity, physiotherapy, pain management, sometimes bracing, under veterinary supervision.
Bracing — read our honest assessment of whether dog knee braces are effective before you spend anything. Briefly: a brace limits abnormal joint movement mechanically, it does not repair the ligament, and the evidence comparing it to surgery is unsettled.
The weight conversation nobody enjoys
If your Golden is overweight, that is the single most actionable thing in this entire article — more actionable than any product we could sell you.
It reduces load on the joint, improves outcomes under either treatment path, lowers anaesthetic risk if surgery happens, and reduces strain on the other knee, which is now carrying more of the load. Ask your vet for a body condition score and a target. It is unglamorous and it works.
If you go the brace route

Frequently asked
Are Golden Retrievers prone to ACL tears? They tear cruciate ligaments commonly, but they are not on the ACVS high-incidence breed list. The risk appears driven more by weight, age and conformation than by breed itself — which is good news, because those are partly within your control.
Can it heal without surgery? The ACVS describes this as a degenerative process, with partial tears progressing to complete ones. Functional stabilisation without surgery is discussed more often for smaller, lighter dogs. Ask your vet where your Golden sits rather than inferring it from a website.
Will the other knee go too? Elevated contralateral risk is well recognised in cruciate disease generally, since this is a ligament disease rather than an isolated injury. Worth discussing monitoring with your vet.
My Golden is 10 — is surgery still an option? Age alone does not rule it out; overall health and anaesthetic risk matter more. That assessment needs a vet who has examined your dog.
